Imagine the most perfect, peaceful, picturesque scene. No city lights. No road rage. No bad news. No political debates. No any-other-kind-of-debates. That moment when you think, All is right with the world.
And then you look at your smartphone, where the opinions scream at you. And then there are “reaction” options so you can take sides {because it wasn’t enough to just “like” or not}. You read one dogmatic stance, then, 24 hours later, come back to read a rebuttal. And tomorrow, come back for a rebuttal of the rebuttal.
Okay, seriously – we can’t all be right. But then how is it that we get so many things wrong?
Take this question, for instance: A woman is married, then widowed, seven times – which one will be her husband in heaven?
Before you phone a friend, Google “marriage in heaven,” or conduct a complete categorization of the related articles in your newsfeed, check out Jesus’ answer:
Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God? Mark 12:24
The Sadducees were asking the wrong question in the first place because there is no marriage in heaven. They would have known this already, how? If they had spent a little more time in the Scriptures.
And so it goes with this opinion-filled world. We might not get things so wrong all the time if we knew the Scriptures.
But how much time do we spend studying, learning, knowing the Scriptures? Not nearly as much time as we spend simmering in all things opposite.
I urge you, as I urge myself – set aside all that is lesser-than. All that distracts. All that misleads. All that is not Truth.
Truth is found in God himself, revealed to us through His Word. So study that. Learn that. Know that.
If we know the Scriptures and the power of God, we won’t have much reason to get things wrong.
