Out of pure intrigue and speculation, I present a possible scenario in which one loses their father and doesn’t need another one because they already have one. Just role with it for a sec.
You leave everything to follow Christ. Your house. Your brothers. Your sisters. Your mother. Your father. Your children. And your land.
You soon receive it all back a hundred times over. Houses. Brothers. Sisters. Mothers. Children. Lands.
But no father.
Peter began to say to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you.”
Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers . . . and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.”Mark 10:28-30
Why no father? Well . . .
You leave house and land to discover that the dwelling place of every believer is your home.
You leave brothers and sisters, mothers and children, only to find the family of God.
And you leave your father with no void to be filled. Because your Heavenly Father is the one who called you. And you left everything to follow him.
Okay, perhaps the omission of “father” in that text was not so intended, but let’s just say that’s where my mind wanders. I see two lists, I compare them, I notice a “mistake,” I wonder why. And in a little item “missing” from a list, I learn a profound truth confirmed throughout the Word: When you follow Christ, you get the package deal – Father included.
Journey of the Word 
That’s a very interesting observation, Lydia, and I think you’ve hit on something important. Words mean things. Words that are not there also mean things. In other words, what the Bible doesn’t say is often just as important as what it does say.
There was another item you didn’t discuss that is mentioned in the first list but not the second, that is wives. Just thought I’d point that out for anyone who might want to justify having “a hundredfold” wives, because there are some folks around who still try to pass that off. 😉

Yes, the wives are mentioned in Luke, but not in Mark. The list is repeated only in Mark. …if I’m getting things straight {I may be getting lost in the various Gospels!}

I like this, the idea of a ‘package deal–Father included.’ When I came to Christ at 19 my biological father had been gone from my life since I was 5, my father at the time was a stepfather. I was 40 years old when God restored my heart to a place of sensing healing in His presence, the Father I needed all along.

You noticed something interesting here. We have God the Father as our father, and perhaps that is why Jesus did not mention father in that verse. Thank you for sharing with us here at Tell me a Story.

I love the treasure that a careful reading of a text yields. And when we memorize Scripture we do tend to notice things we miss otherwise.
